Nathaniel teaches in a way that is extremely student-centred with a focus on engagement and understanding, rather than rote memorization!
He places a heavy emphasis on creating a safe space where students are encouraged to freely make mistakes and explore different trains of thought without the fear of being judged.
Sessions are always designed to feel productive, motivating, and fun! Instead of overwhelming students with large amounts of information all at once, Nathaniel breaks down complex concepts into bite-sized pieces. This helps reduce intimidation, and helps students build up from "I have no idea what's going on", all the way to "This is a piece of cake!"
Brain Gains Tutoring would be a good fit for students who might need:
Extra help catching up and staying on top of assignments and projects
Academic support for upcoming assessments, such as quizzes, unit tests, and PATs
An "extra boost" in rebuilding their confidence after having fallen behind in school
A fun and safe environment where they can ask questions and be themselves without pressure
Step-by-step explanations for complex topics that make sense / are easier to digest
Contrary to popular belief, a child does not need to be "bad at school" or "weak in ____" to benefit from tutoring! While some students come in because they are struggling, others might come in to strengthen their skills, feel more prepared, and stay ahead of the curve.
Sessions would especially benefit students who require extra patience, encouragement, or someone who is more than happy to explain things more than one way!
Students with all types of learning differences and accommodations are always welcome at Brain Gains Tutoring!
Because sessions are typically 1-on-1, they can be adjusted to better support the student's needs, no matter where they're at. This can include supports such as (but not limited to):
Shorter / Simpler Steps
Visual Examples
Occasional Brain / Movement Breaks
Slower session pace (if needed)
The ultimate objective is to create a safe enough environment where students are willing to try, ask questions, and gradually build positive momentum without making them feel rushed, stressed, or overwhelmed.
While tutoring isn't a suitable replacement for specialized services in psychology, counselling, or educational support, it can work efficiently alongside those supports by supplementing what students are learning in school.
Being anxious or embarrassed about tutoring is completely normal, and it's far more common than most people realize!
Many students feel nervous because they think that tutoring is a sign that they're "not smart enough" or "falling behind". Sessions with Brain Gains Tutoring takes that assumption and flips it right on its head— tutoring is not a punishment, nor is it a sign of failure! Tutoring provides support, practice, and a way to make school go from "final boss mode" to something much more manageable.
Initial sessions are held in a very approachable and low-pressure manner, with the end goals being to establish trust, figuring out where the student is at, and helping them build confidence one step at a time!
Absolutely! After every session, parents will receive an oral summary of what was covered, how the student is progressing, and if there are any areas that might require a little extra practice.
Written summaries are also available to parents upon request, and will cover multiple sessions worth of information.

Extra practice is not something that is assigned to students between sessions. Brain Gains Tutoring was founded on the idea of supporting students through their pre-existing workload, not add on top of it!
Many students' schedules are already jam-packed with assignments, studying, extracurricular activities, and socializing outside of a school setting, whether that be spending time with friends, or enjoying time with family. Instead of assigning extra practice, sessions are laser-focused on taking the work the student already has, and making it feel more manageable!
When helpful, things such as review strategies, "tips and tricks", and study habits may be brought up to students for them to take a look at before the next session. The goal of each session at Brain Gains Tutoring isn't to make their workload heavier, but rather to help students leave each time with more confidence, clarity, and momentum than they came in with!
